About ME
I was born in Milan, Italy and my journey with music began at the age of twelve learning how to play acoustic guitar. At seventeen, I started exploring my voice with classical singing training, which I continued for other seven years. In my early twenties, I was part of a contemporary gospel choir for about three years. During that time, I was able to share music and life with some of the most talented and heartfelt people I’ve ever known. Some of them still have a special place in my heart; some of them are among my favorite artists to this day. I couldn’t have known that the gospel choir experience would have brought me to the most important artistic pivotal point of my life. From that moment onwards, I felt the urge to enrich my knowledge of music, starting from jazz. In 2003, I began jazz singing training with Tiziana Ghiglioni, at The International Academy of Milan. Tiziana is still one of my main mentors. Her artistry has kidnapped, accompanied and nourished me over the years. She has undeniably left a mark on my journey in jazz music, for ever.
I was captivated by jazz from the get-go and it has completely changed my life. It almost feels like I’ve been living this past thirteen years under a spell. I strongly believe that jazz is the perfect playground where to find the true essence of music. Jazz has given me the opportunity to challenge and express myself, using my voice only.
It has forced me to search for my own voice and believe in my music, accepting the risk of feeling “naked”. Or at least, try. The journey to find freedom and ourselves is exciting, but can be frustrating at times. It’s a long winding road, but every step of the way is worthwhile.
From 2006 on, I had the privilege to meet and study with some of the greatest Masters, around Europe and in America. Such as Barry Harris, Jay Clayton, Sheila Jordan, Michelle Hendricks, Roberta Gambarini, Rachel Gould. Now that I’ve attended the ‘Barry Harris New York Workshop’, I can truly say that all musicians should experience it at least once in their lives. Because it exudes humanity, vitality, and dedication. The tight connection with music that you’re able to live there is quite moving and astonishing.
In 2012, I graduated in Jazz from the Conservatory Giuseppe Verdi of Milan, Italy studying with Diana Torto, a close collaborator of Kenny Wheeler and John Taylor, whose music I’ve grown to love over the last years.
Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Billie Holiday, Shirley Horn, Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Bill Evans, Carmen McRae, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Gil Evans, Chet Baker, Ella Fitzgerald, Joe Henderson, Oscar Peterson, Wayne Shorter, Nina Simone, Betty Carter, Dave Brubeck, Brad Mehldau, Norma Winstone, Steve Lacy, Cedar Walton, Horace Silver, Art Blackey & the Jazz Messengers, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Elis Regina, Joao Gilberto as much as Debussy, Ravel, Satie, Rachmaninov, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Joni Mitchell, Pink Floyd, Prince, Bjork, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, The Beatles. These are just some of the artists I grew up listening to.
All the great Masters, I was fortunate enough to encounter along my journey, have shared the same strong message, which I’ve embraced, “Sing your own story.”
